Most new traders in Pakistan lose their first few trades for a very boring reason. They trade at the wrong time.
They open the chart at 11 AM, see gold barely moving, force a trade, and get chopped up. Then they go to sleep at 11 PM and miss the move they were waiting for all day. The forex market is open 24 hours, but it's only busy for a few of them.
This guide gives you every forex session in Pakistan Standard Time (PKT), what changes between summer and winter, and the hours that actually matter for gold and the major pairs.
The Forex Market Week in Pakistan Time
The forex market runs from Monday morning to Saturday morning, Pakistan time:
- Opens: Monday around 3:00 AM PKT in winter (2:00 AM in summer)
- Closes: Saturday around 3:00 AM PKT in winter (2:00 AM in summer)
So your Friday night is still a trading night. The market only closes in the early hours of Saturday, and it stays shut through Sunday.
Exact times vary slightly between brokers, so always check the trading hours shown in your MT4 or MT5 terminal for each instrument.
Forex Session Timings in PKT
The day is split into three main sessions, named after the financial centres that drive them. Pakistan doesn't use daylight saving time, but the UK and US do. That's why the London and New York times move by one hour twice a year.
Winter timings (early November to March)
| Session | Time in PKT | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Asian (Tokyo, Sydney) | 5:00 AM – 2:00 PM | Quiet, tight ranges |
| London | 1:00 PM – 10:00 PM | Volume arrives, trends start |
| New York | 6:00 PM – 3:00 AM | Big moves, US news |
| London–New York overlap | 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM | The busiest hours of the day |
Summer timings (late March to October)
| Session | Time in PKT | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Asian (Tokyo, Sydney) | 5:00 AM – 2:00 PM | Quiet, tight ranges |
| London | 12:00 PM – 9:00 PM | Volume arrives, trends start |
| New York | 5:00 PM – 2:00 AM | Big moves, US news |
| London–New York overlap | 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM | The busiest hours of the day |
One catch: the US and UK change their clocks on different dates. For two or three weeks in March, and for about a week around the end of October, New York has shifted but London hasn't. During those weeks the overlap is an hour shorter. If you're unsure, check the session indicator on TradingView rather than guessing.
What Happens in Each Session
Asian session: 5 AM to 2 PM
This is the Pakistani morning. Tokyo and Sydney are open, but most of the world's big money isn't trading yet.
Pairs like USD/JPY, AUD/USD and NZD/USD move the most here. Gold and EUR/USD usually drift in a narrow range. That range matters later, because London often breaks out of it. Our post on the Asian trading session explains how to use it.
London session: 1 PM to 10 PM (winter)
London is the largest forex centre in the world, and you can feel it when it opens. Volume jumps, spreads tighten and the day's trend often starts.
A common pattern: London sweeps the high or low of the Asian range first, grabs the stop losses sitting there, then moves in the real direction. If you've read about liquidity hunts on gold, this is where you'll see them most clearly.
Best pairs: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, EUR/GBP and gold.
New York session: 6 PM to 3 AM (winter)
New York brings the US dollar into play, and with it most of the market-moving news. Major US data releases come out at 8:30 AM New York time, which is 6:30 PM PKT in winter and 5:30 PM PKT in summer.
That includes Non-Farm Payrolls (usually the first Friday of the month), CPI inflation and retail sales. Interest rate decisions from the US Federal Reserve land later, at 12:00 AM PKT in winter (11:00 PM in summer).
Best pairs: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/CAD, USD/JPY and gold.
The London–New York overlap: 6 PM to 10 PM (winter)
When both centres are open at the same time, the market is at its deepest. Most of the day's biggest moves on gold and the major pairs happen inside these four hours.
For traders in Pakistan, this is a gift. The busiest hours of the global market fall after office time and before bed.
Best Time to Trade Gold (XAU/USD) in Pakistan
Gold is the most popular instrument for Pakistani traders, and it has its own rhythm.
- Best window: London open (around 1 PM PKT in winter) and the London–New York overlap (6 PM to 10 PM PKT in winter).
- Most dangerous minutes: around 6:30 PM PKT in winter on days with big US data. Gold can move $10 to $20 in seconds. If you're new, stay flat until the first candle closes.
- Daily break: most brokers pause gold for about an hour each night, around 3:00 to 4:00 AM PKT in winter (2:00 to 3:00 AM in summer). Spreads widen just before and after.
- Quietest time: the Asian morning. Gold often moves in a small range until London opens.

When You Should Not Trade
Knowing when to stay out is as useful as knowing when to trade.
- Monday early morning. The market has just opened, liquidity is thin and spreads are wide.
- Friday late night. Big traders close positions before the weekend, and moves can be random.
- A few minutes before and after major news, unless you have a tested plan for news trading.
- Late New York, after about 1 AM PKT in winter. Volume fades and price often goes sideways.
- Bank holidays in the UK or US, such as Christmas and US Thanksgiving. Volume drops sharply.
A Simple Schedule for People With a Job
You don't need to sit at the screen all day. If you work or study, the evening window suits you well.
- Before work or at lunch: mark the Asian session high and low on your gold or EUR/USD chart. Two minutes is enough.
- Around London open (1 PM in winter): check whether price has swept one side of that range. No need to trade yet.
- 6 PM to 10 PM: this is your trading window. Look for your setup, take it with a stop loss, or take nothing.
- Before bed: write the trade in your trading journal, win or lose.
This is also why our online Group Session runs from 8 to 9 PM: it lands right in the middle of the busiest hours, so you study the market while it's moving.
